Heart of Midlothian
MAKING HEARTS THE TALK OF THE TOON AND THE INTERNET TOON
OUR HEARTS WERE IN IT
As a company based in Edinburgh with a number of Edinburgh-born staff it is likely that some of us are going to in some way have some affiliation with one of Edinburgh’s two big clubs, thankfully three of us are boyhood fans of the biggest one. Heart of Midlothian.
So when we were approached by the club to help them bring some contemporary design style into the new purpose built main stand at Hearts home Tynecastle Park, we were delighted to be given the opportunity.
VINYL IS FOR MUSIC
When we first looked at the brief the requirement was to create designs that could be applied with vinyl although the team at Hearts were open to other suggestions. We quickly worked with them to bring to light and introduce them to the modern resurgence in traditional sign painting, something we have utilised many times and are huge fans of. We felt that for such a new and clean stadium it was a way to inject a little bit of history and permanence into the building. It also felt like it would allow us to elevate anything installed to feel more like artwork rather than wallpaper. The club agreed.
SIGN PAINTER HERO
We got to work and created a suite of ideas for the club taking in phrases from the most well known Hearts songs, commentary and history as well as using old kit designs to cover large areas with abstract but recognisable patterns. We worked with local sign painter Thomas Paints to bring to life the designs in an interesting tactile way in places that might not be expected in the stadium.
The artworks were painted towards the end of the 18/19 season so fans only had a few weeks to see them before the end of the season, but, already, the anecdotal evidence is that these have been taken to the heart of Hearts fans and we are now working with the club to take on the once in a lifetime opportunity to help design and decide what goes in the brand new Home player’s dressing room as well as the tunnel.
